Ingredients for Hot Chocolate Pucks

These festive holiday treats come together in minutes with just a few pantry staples:

hot chocolate pucks ingredients

  • 3 cups chocolate chips (semi-sweet or milk)
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows, approximately
  • Muffin tin and cupcake liners (about 12)

How to Make Hot Chocolate Pucks

These holiday treats are seriously easy and super satisfying.

1. Prep the pan: Line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.
2. Melt the chocolate: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips and coconut oil. Microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring between each, until melted and glossy.

3. Add the dry ingredients: Whisk in the cocoa powder and powdered sugar until smooth.
4. Fill the liners: Spoon about 1.5 tablespoons of the chocolate mixture into each cupcake liner. Tap the pan gently to remove air bubbles.

5. Add mini marshmallows: Press a small handful of mini marshmallows into the top of each puck while the chocolate is still warm.

6. Top with more chocolate: Add approximately 1.5 tablespoons chocolate on top of your marshmallows. You can add even more marshmallows on top of this if you want even more marshmallow fun!

7. Chill: Refrigerate for about 30 minutes, or until firm. You can use a butter knife to gently remove your hot chocolate pucks from the pan, but I recommend you keep them in the cupcake liners until you’re ready to use them.

Store: Keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one month.

How to use: Heat 1 cup (8–10 ounces) of milk until hot but not boiling. Drop in one hot chocolate puck and stir until fully melted. For extra richness, you can use 1.5 pucks or reduce the milk slightly.

Pro Tips

  • Use good quality chocolate chips for the smoothest melt and best flavor. Semi-sweet is classic, milk chocolate is sweeter, and dark chocolate gives a richer drink.
  • Keep mug size in mind. Most regular mugs are made to hold about 12 ounces of liquid. You definitely can dissolve these in 12 ounces of milk (I even tested it!) and they will come out fine. However, if you want that rich and cozy chocolate flavor go for around 10 ounces of milk. For a really chocolatey flavor, only go with 8. You can always add more milk, too!
  • Add flavor variations: swap candy canes for mini marshmallows, caramel or anything you like.
  • For a dairy-free version, use dairy-free chocolate chips and a plant milk of your choice.
  • Package them in cellophane bags with a ribbon and a note that says “Melt in 1 cup hot milk” for quick edible gifts

FAQs

How many pucks does this make?
About 10–12 pucks, depending on how full you fill each liner.

Can I freeze these?
YesFor sure Freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Let them sit out for a few minutes before using.

Can I use water instead of milk?
Technically yes, but they taste much better with milk. You can do half milk and half water if needed, but I recommend all milk for the best flavor.

What if I don’t have coconut oil?
You can swap in another neutral oil like vegetable or avocado oil. The oil helps the chocolate melt smoothly.
