Cake Mix Apple Cobbler
This easy apple cobbler is made with canned apple pie filling, cozy cinnamon and nutmeg, boxed cake mix, and melted butter for a simple dessert that tastes warm and homemade. It bakes up with a sweet apple filling and golden cake mix topping, making it perfect for fall gatherings, Thanksgiving, potlucks, or an easy family dessert.
Ingredients
- 2 cans apple pie filling about 20 to 21 ounces each
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg optional
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 Tbsp lemon juice optional
- 1 to 2 Tbsp brown sugar optional
- 1 box yellow cake mix or white or spice
- 3/4 cup butter melted
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts optional
- Coarse sugar or extra brown sugar optional for topping
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
- Add the apple pie filling directly to the prepared baking dish. Stir in the cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, lemon juice, and brown sugar if using.
- Spread the apple mixture into an even layer across the bottom of the dish.
- Next, sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the apple filling. Try to cover the apples as evenly as possible without pressing the cake mix down into the filling.
- Drizzle the melted butter over the dry cake mix. Try to cover as much of the surface as you can so the topping bakes evenly. It is okay if there are a few small dry spots, but the butter should be spread out as evenly as possible.
- If you are using chopped nuts, sprinkle them over the top. You can also add a little coarse sugar or brown sugar for extra texture.
- Bake the cobbler for 30-40 minutes and check on your topping. If you see dry spots of cake mix still on top, melt some more butter and pour it over the dry spots.
- Continue baking another 10-20 minutes, or until the apple filling is bubbling around the edges and the topping is all golden brown. Let it cool for about 10 to 15 minutes before serving.
- Serve this easy apple cobbler warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, caramel sauce, or a dusting of cinnamon.
