Equipment

  • 2 donut pans I used the pans that are 3.25 inches in diameter and got 12 donuts

Ingredients

Baked Donuts

  • 2 cup flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk room temperature
  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt room temperature. I like greek yogurt.
  • 1 large egg room temperature
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 cup melted butter or a neutral oil like vegetable oil

Glaze and Decorations

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2-3 Tbsp milk adjust for texture
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • Sprinkles optional

Instructions

Make Donut Batter

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a donut pan.
  • Mix dry ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
  • Mix wet ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, yogurt, egg, vanilla extract, and melted butter. It helps if your cold ingredients aren't freezing cold from coming out of the fridge and if your butter isn't super hot.
  • Combine: Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Put your batter in a piping bag with no tip, just the end cut off. This is optional, but I think very helpful.
  • Fill the pan: Spoon or pipe the batter into the donut molds, filling each about 2/3 full.
  • Bake: Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the donuts spring back when lightly pressed. Let them cool for a few minutes in the pan, then transfer to a wire rack.

Make Glaze

  • In a small but deep bowl (a bowl only slightly wider than your donut is perfect), whisk all of your glaze ingredients together until smooth.
  • Glaze donuts: Carefully place your donuts face-down in the glaze. Allow the donut to sit for a second to allow the glaze to stick, then gently pull the donut out of the glaze. Place glaze-side up on a plate to set.
  • Decorate: If you want to add sprinkles, add those to the top of your donut while the glaze is still wet. Then, allow the glaze and sprinkles to set
