A History of Lemon Oreos

Lemon Oreos have the perfect balance of sweet and tangy, with a hint of sunshine in every bite. With their golden Oreo cookie exterior and a luscious lemon-flavored filling, they quickly won the hearts of cookie lovers everywhere. Whether you enjoy them dunked in milk or savor them on their own, Lemon Oreos are a delightful treat.

Before we dive into the scrumptious world of Lemon Oreo Truffles, let’s take a moment to appreciate the origins of Lemon Oreos themselves. According to tastingtable.com, the Lemon Oreo was originally (like OG) introduced in the 1920’s! Now, I don’t know about you, but I don’t remember Lemon Oreos always being around for my childhood.

I do not remember exactly what year it was that I started consistently seeing Lemon Oreos on the shelves of grocery stores. At first, I thought they would be a seasonal flavor when Lemon Oreos came back. However, it looks like they are here to stay! And I am SO glad they continue to be available, because (thanks to a sale at Target!) I ended up buying some and decided to try to make my own Lemon Oreo balls.

How to Make Lemon Oreo Truffles

Now that we’ve covered the essentials, let’s dive into the step-by-step guide for crafting these mouthwatering Lemon Oreo Truffles.

Video How to Make Lemon Oreo Balls:

Ingredients:

Lemon oreo balls ingredients 1

– 18 Lemon Oreo cookies (Make sure they’re the regular lemon and not the thin!)

– 2 ounces of cream cheese (at room temperature)

Melting chocolate (I used white and yellow. You can also use food coloring to make white chocolate any color you want)

– Coconut oil (optional)

Instructions:

Begin by preparing a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to place the truffles on after shaping.

1. In a food processor, place your cream cheese and then pile the Oreos on top. You want the cream cheese closest to the blades so that it gets mixed in well.

2. Pulse your Oreos and cream cheese until you have a dough. You want something that’s about the texture of Play Dough, honestly, If yours seems a little dry or crumbly, add in a little more cream cheese until you get that dough texture.

3. Roll your dough into balls and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes or the freezer for 15 minutes. You can decide on the size and shape of your truffles. I got about 24 out of mine, but it really all depends on just how big you make your lemon Oreo balls.

4. Melt your melting candies according to the package instructions. Using a spoon, coat your lemon Oreo balls entirely in chocolate, and then place back on the cookie sheet to set.

5. Once you coat your Lemon Oreo balls in chocolate and set them down to set, you may see a little puddle of melted chocolate hardening around the base of your Oreo balls. Once the chocolate sets, you can gently break off the excess chocolate with your fingers.

6. If you want to decorate your lemon Oreo balls with something like edible glitter or sprinkles, make sure to do that while the chocolate on the outside is still wet! I chose to do a yellow chocolate drizzle instead, which you can add at the very end even if your white chocolate layer has already set.

Once your Lemon Oreo Truffles have firmed up, they are ready to serve. Enjoy their delightful combination of lemony zing and sweet indulgence! Store in the fridge or freezer to keep fresh.

Pro Tips for Making Lemon Oreo Balls

1. Choose the Right Lemon Oreos

When it comes to crafting the perfect Lemon Oreo Truffle, it all starts with the choice of cookies. Make sure you use the classic Lemon Oreos, as they provide the ideal balance of sweetness and citrusy flavor and cookie/filling ratio. There is a thin version of them that I see sometimes, but really the magic is in the filling, so you don’t want to skimp out on that!

2. Use Real Melting Candies

Shoutout to the cashier at Michael’s who was complaining to me that she could never get chocolate coatings correct on her baked goods using regular chocolate chips! Please, please, please buy some actual melting chocolate (sometimes called melting candies or candy coating) for this! Real chocolate just won’t work unless you add a lot of oil to it. Trust me, the melting candies are SO much easier I used the Sweet Tooth Fairy ones from Michael’s (which I really should have told that poor cashier about, now that I think of it!)

3. Use a Little Coconut Oil

I really love the Sweet Tooth Fairy melting candies from Michael’s, but when I use them for certain things, I feel like the chocolate is just a little too thick. When you make these, you want the excess chocolate to sort of drip off, leaving you with a smooth chocolate coating. Not an “oh there’s another lump” kind of coating. If you find that your melting chocolate is too thick, add a little coconut oil and stir it until it’s evenly distributed. I added about half a teaspoon of coconut oil to ⅓ of a bag of melting candies when I did this.
