How to Make a Jack-o-Lantern Pull Apart Cupcake Cake
Bake the cupcakes
1. Preheat the oven to the temperature specified on your cake mix and line a cupcake tin with liners.
2. Prepare the cake mix according to the directions on the box.
3. Divide the batter between lined cupcake tins and bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cupcakes to cool completely before decorating.
Make the buttercream
1. Beat the softened butter until smooth and fluffy.
2. Gradually mix in the powdered sugar, vanilla, and enough milk to create a creamy, spreadable frosting.
3. Add orange food coloring until you reach a bright pumpkin color.
4. Transfer the orange buttercream to a piping bag if desired. This makes it much easier to add frosting to each cupcake. If you don’t have a piping bag, a zip-top bag with the corner snipped off works well too.
Arrange the cupcake cake
1. Place a small dab of frosting on the bottom of each cupcake to act as “glue,” then arrange the cupcakes on a cake board in a rounded pumpkin shape. Leave space at the top for the stem cupcake.
2. Pipe a generous swirl of frosting onto each cupcake. Using an offset spatula or butter knife, gently spread the frosting until the cupcakes blend together into one smooth pumpkin shape.
3. Place another cupcake at the top to create the pumpkin stem.
4. If you notice small gaps around the edges of the pumpkin, trim extra cupcakes in half and tuck them into the empty spaces before covering them with additional frosting. Smooth everything together so it looks like one large cake.
Make the jack-o-lantern face
1. Using the tip of a butter knife, lightly trace the eyes, nose, and smile into the orange frosting. This gives you a guide before adding the black icing and makes it much easier to get everything centered.
2. Outline the traced design with black decorating icing, then fill in each section. Use a butter knife to gently smooth the icing for a cleaner finish.
3. Use green decorating icing to cover the stem cupcake and create the look of a pumpkin stem.
4. Place the completed pull apart cupcake cake in the refrigerator for 20–30 minutes to allow the frosting to firm up before transporting or serving.
Pro Tips
- Leave yourself extra room on your cake board. I actually wish I hadn’t filled my cake board as much as I had while I was making mine. It’s a bit easier to transport if you have a larger cakeboard and don’t fill the whole thing with cupcakes.
- Chill the cupcakes for a few minutes after sticking them on the cake board to make sure they really stick. Chilling the finished cupcake cake also makes transporting it much easier.
- Pipe plenty of frosting onto each cupcake. A generous layer makes it much easier to smooth everything into one seamless pumpkin.
- Don’t worry about making the pumpkin perfectly round. Real pumpkins have lots of personality!
- Lightly sketching the face first helps keep the eyes and smile even.
- If you’re serving a crowd, simply let guests pull off individual cupcakes, no knife required.

FAQs
How many cupcakes does this pull apart cupcake cake use?
I used 14 cupcakes on a 10-inch round cake board. You could always use more if you had a larger cake board. I filled my cakeboard to the very edge to get those 14 cupcakes in, and it made it harder to transport in the end. It’s easier if you give yourself more wiggle room and don’t fill the entire cake board.
Can I use store-bought frosting?
You could, but I would worry about it blending in with the decorating icing and colors running together. This buttercream recipe is thick and fluffy and the decorating icing just sits nicely on top. Sometimes, frosting from a can is more runny and I would worry that the colors would blend together.
Do I have to use the decorating icing?
Nope! You could make an extra small batch of buttercream and color part of it black and part of it green and use that to draw on the face and stem. I would use maybe a half stick of butter, 1 cup powdered sugar, a ¼ teaspoon vanilla and a small splash of milk to start. Then, use gel food coloring (I like the kind from Michael’s) to color part of it black and part of it green. I would use a piping bag with just the tip cut off for drawing on the black face.
That being said, I think using the black decorating icing is easier all around. It can be hard to get black, black frosting. Usually, you have to let the frosting sit 15 minutes so the black food coloring darkens.
Can I make this ahead of time?
Absolutely. You can bake the cupcakes one day in advance. Once assembled, store the finished cake covered in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve.
Do I have to use a boxed cake mix?
Not at all. Your favorite homemade vanilla or white cupcake recipe works just as well.
How should I store leftovers?
Cover the leftover Halloween cupcakes tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Let them sit at room temperature for about 20 minutes before serving for the best texture.
