Ingredients for 4th of July Blondies
Before we get started, let’s gather all the ingredients we’ll need:
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
- 1 1/2 cups light brown sugar, packed
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1 1/2 cups red and blue M&M’s (white, too, if you can find them!)
- 1/2 cup red and blue sprinkles (white, too, if you can find them!)
- 10 Oreos, roughly chopped
How to Make 4th of July Blondies
Now that we have everything we need, let’s get baking!
1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9×13-inch pan with parchment paper, leaving overhang for easy removal.
2. In a large bowl, whisk together the melted butter and brown sugar until smooth.
3. Add eggs and vanilla extract, whisking until combined.
4. Add in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix until just combined—avoid overmixing.
5. Fold in 1 ¼-ish cups of M&M’s (reserve the rest for decorating the top), sprinkles and chopped Oreos (reserve some for decorating the top)
6. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan.
7. Bake for 10-15 minutes, then sprinkle extra M&M’s and a few chopped Oreos on Top for Decoration
8. Bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the edges are golden and a toothpick inserted near the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
9. Cool completely in the pan before slicing into bars.
Pro Tips
- Browning the Butter For an extra layer of rich, nutty flavor, consider browning the butter before mixing it with the sugar. Simply melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring frequently, until it turns golden brown and has a fragrant, nutty aroma. Let it cool slightly before using, though, or the hot butter might cook the eggs, and you’ll have scrambled egg bits in your batter.
- Mix-in Variations While the red, white, and blue candies are perfect for the 4th of July, you can customize these blondies with other mix-ins like chopped nuts or dried fruit. You could also try Chips Ahoy cookies instead of Oreos.
- Storage Store any leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature. They’ll stay fresh and chewy for up to 5 days, not that they’ll last that long!
- Put some extra decorations on top: I think these blondies would look adorables with red, white and blue chocolate drizzled over them! If you can’t do that with what you have in your kitchen, definitely pause baking about halfway through to sprinkle the top with more M&M’s and Oreos. If you sprinkle the extra toppings on top from the beginning, they’ll sink down into the batter by the time everything’s done. Pausing halfway to add those gives you a prettier look in the end.
FAQs
Q: Can I make these blondies gluten-free? A: Absolutely! Substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free flour blend that includes xanthan gum. Keep in mind that the texture might be slightly different, but they should still be delicious
Q: Can I use dark brown sugar instead of light brown sugar? A: Yes, using dark brown sugar will give the blondies a deeper molasses flavor and a slightly darker color. They will definitely still taste delicious!
Q: How do I know when the blondies are done baking? A: The blondies are ready when the edges are set and lightly browned, and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs. Be careful not to overbake, as this can make them dry. They may look a bit under-done in the very middle, but they will firm up more out of the oven as your blondies cool.
Q: Can I freeze these blondies? A: Yes, you can freeze blondies. Once they’ve cooled completely, wrap them tightly in plastic wrap and place them in a freezer-safe bag or container. They can be frozen for up to 3 months. To enjoy, let them thaw at room temperature first.
Q: What if I don’t have just red and blue M&M’s? A: No worries! I didn’t either, actually! I bought a big bag of M&M’s and spent about 2 minutes picking out the red and blue ones. I believe you can also buy red, white and blue M&M’s closer to the 4th of July, but I didn’t see any in the store when I was looking.
I hope you enjoy baking these festive 4th of July Blondies as much as I did. They’re a fun summer treat that brings a burst of patriotic flair to any celebration. Happy baking, and have a fantastic Independence Day!
