How to Make Valentine’s Day Puppy Chow

I love how quickly this all comes together in one big bowl and a couple of bags. Here is exactly how I do it.

1. Prep your coating mixture

  • Crush your freeze dried strawberries into a fine powder. You can use a bullet blender, or put them in a zip top bag and crush them with a rolling pin (the bullet blender method is much easier!)
  • In a large zip-top bag, combine 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar with 2–4 tablespoons strawberry powder.
    • Shake or whisk to fully blend.
    • You’ll probably want to divide the mixture into 2–3 batches, because not all the puppy chow will fit in one bag an once.

2. Melt the chocolate mixture

  • In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter.
  • Microwave in 30-second increments, stirring after each, until smooth (1–1 1/2 minutes total).
  • Stir in the vanilla extract.

3. Coat the cereal

  • Pour the warm chocolate–peanut butter mixture over the Rice Chex.
  • Gently fold with a spatula until every piece is evenly coated.

4. Shake with strawberry powdered sugar

  • Transfer a portion of the coated cereal into the zip-top bag with the strawberry powdered sugar mixture. Seal well.
  • Shake vigorously until the cereal turns pink and no glossy chocolate spots remain.
  • Repeat with remaining cereal, adding more powdered sugar or strawberry powder if needed for coverage or deeper color.

5. Cool and set

  • Spread the coated cereal onto a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Let cool for 15–20 minutes so the coating firms up and the mix-ins won’t smear.
6. Add the Valentine’s mix-ins
  • Once cool, pour the puppy chow into a large serving bowl.
  • Fold in the Valentine’s Day M&Ms, Rolo Pretzels, and any additional mix-ins such as pretzels or freeze-dried strawberry pieces.
  • Stir gently to avoid crushing the cereal.

7. Serve or package

  • Serve in a large bowl for parties, or portion into clear bags for sweet Valentine’s treats.

Pro Tips

  • Keep it looking bright and pretty: I let the chocolate coated cereal cool fully before adding M&M’s or other candy so the candy colors stay crisp and vibrant. Warm puppy chow will melt the M&M colors for sure.
  • The easy way to crush freeze dried strawberries: To get your freeze dried strawberries into a fine powder for minimal effort, definitely use a bullet blender. I was a bit skeptical as to whether it would work for such a small amount, but it really it!
  • Microwave carefully: Don’t skip melting the chocolate in short bursts and stirring in between. Overheating chocolate can make it kind of solidify (ironically) and turn grainy; if that happens, a spoonful of extra peanut butter can smooth it back out. I usually start over if that happens, but I fully understand if you want to try to save your chocolate chips with the way prices are going these days!
  • Make it ahead: Valentine’s Day Puppy Chow is perfect to prep the night before. I store it in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days. For parties, I like to make it 1 day ahead so the flavors settle but the cereal is still crisp. If you live in a hot, humid environment and you’re worried about it getting a bit melt-y, you can also store it in the fridge.
  • Allergy friendly ideas: If you need a peanut free option, swap the peanut butter for cookie butter or sunflower seed butter. Just make sure to check the labels on your chocolate chips and candies too.

FAQs

Can I use a different cereal?

Yes. Any similar square cereal like Corn Chex or Crispix works. I like Rice Chex because the flavor is neutral and lets the chocolate and peanut butter shine through.

How do I store this puppy chow?

I store it in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days. If your kitchen is very warm, you can refrigerate it; just know it will firm up a bit and the chocolate may feel slightly harder when chilled.

Can I freeze puppy chow?

Absolutely! You can put the puppy chow in a freezer safe bag or container and freeze it for up to 2 months. Let it come to room temperature before serving so the flavors come back to life and the texture is crisp again.

What if I do not like peanut butter?

You can replace the peanut butter with almond butter, cashew butter, or even cookie butter. Each option gives a slightly different flavor, but they all work well in no bake desserts like this one.

Do I need to use Rolo Pretzels?

No, but they add such a fun caramel pretzel surprise that I highly recommend them. If you prefer, you can use plain mini pretzels, chocolate covered pretzels, or caramel candies instead.
