What are Oreo Truffles and Why Are They So Popular
Let’s start with the basics: Oreo truffles, also known as Oreo balls, are bite-sized bundles of bliss that combine the crunch of Oreo cookies with the creamy goodness of cream cheese. They are super popular around Christmas, which is why I was looking for another holiday where we could use these Oreo-based delights.
They are a melt-in-your-mouth experience that’s impossible to resist! They’re incredibly easy to make, require minimal ingredients, and are endlessly customizable. Whether you’re a chocolate purist, a sprinkle fanatic, or a coconut connoisseur, there’s an Oreo truffle variation that will leave your taste buds dancing.
But what truly sets Oreo truffles apart is their ability to be transformed to fit any occasion. From birthdays to bridal showers, these treats know how to steal the spotlight. And of course, with Halloween on the horizon, we’re taking these delectable delights and giving them a spooky twist that will make your Halloween party the talk of the town!
What are Halloween Oreos and When to Buy Them
Now, let’s dive into the stars of our Halloween show: Halloween Oreos! These aren’t your everyday Oreo cookies. No, these are a limited-edition marvel that come adorned with vibrant orange filling and spooky-themed designs. These cookies are a delightful blend of familiar flavors and Halloween fun, making them an absolute must-have in our house every Halloween.
So, when can you snag these bewitching biscuits? Halloween Oreos typically make their grand entrance onto store shelves in early September, just in time for you to stock up for all your October festivities. But act fast! They tend to disappear as quickly as a ghostly apparition once Halloween is over.
How to Make Halloween Pumpkin-Shaped Oreo Truffles
Now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for: crafting your very own Halloween pumpkin-shaped Oreo truffles! Trust me, these treats might look intricate, but they’re as easy to make as they are delightful to devour.
Ingredients:
- 18 Halloween Oreos (Or regular Double Stuf)
- 2 oz. of cream cheese, softened
- Orange candy melts or white chocolate candy melts + orange food coloring
- Green candy melts or white chocolate candy melts + green food coloring
- Coconut oil
- Pretzel sticks (skinny)
Instructions:
Make pumpkin stems:
1. First, break your pretzel sticks into pieces about an inch long (I need 15 little pieces total, but it’s always good to have some extra!). Then, melt your green candy melts according to the instructions.2. Dip the pretzel bits in the green candy melts and leave them to dry on a piece of parchment or wax paper.
3. Let dry completely.
Shape the Pumpkin Oreo Truffles
1. Place your Oreos and cream cheese in a food processor. Pulse until everything is very well mixed and forms a thick dough.
2. Roll your dough into balls about 1-1.5 inches in diameter. Place them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment or wax paper.
3. Take your “stems” that you made and stick one in the top of each of your Oreo balls.
4. Place the Oreo balls in the freezer to set for about 30 minutes.
Color/Coat the Pumpkin Oreo Truffles
1. Melt some orange candy melts according to the package instructions. Or, use white candy melts and add orange food coloring. Note: It’s better to start with a smaller quantity of chocolate and work in multiple batches! I made the mistake of trying to make one large batch of melted chocolate and accidentally burned my chocolate on my first try.
2. You want your melted chocolate to be a little liquidy so that it kind of drips down your pumpkin-shaped Oreo balls. If your chocolate comes out of the microwave thick, add some coconut oil a half teaspoon at a time to make it a little thinner. You want it to be about the texture of gravy.
3. Take your pumpkin Oreo balls out of the freezer and carefully dip the pumpkin part (Not the stem!) in the orange chocolate. You can use a fork or spoon to kind of pour a little bit of the chocolate around the top part without getting the stem.
4. Swirl your pumpkin Oreo ball around in the chocolate gently. Let the excess chocolate drip off and place back on your cookie sheet to set.

Pumpkin-Shaped Oreo Truffles
Ingredients
- 18 Halloween Oreos Or regular Double Stuf Oreos
- 2 oz cream cheese softened
- Green melting chocolate Or white + green food coloring
- Orange melting chocolate Or white + orange food coloring
- 1-2 tsp coconut oil Approximately, may not be needed
- 10 skinny pretzel sticks broken into 1-inch pieces
Instructions
Make Pumpkin Stems
- Break pretzel sticks into 1-inch pieces (approximately). You'll need at least 15 small pieces.
- Melt green melting chocolate according to package instructions. If using white chocolate, melt and add a couple of drops of green food coloring. Make sure you stir until the color is evenly distributed.
- Dip pretzel pieces in the melted green chocolate and lay on a piece of parchment or wax paper to dry
Make Pumpkin-Shaped Oreo Truffles
- Place Oreos and cream cheese in the food processor. Pulse until it forms a consistent dough.
- Form Oreo dough into balls and place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment or wax paper.
- Take the stems that you just made, and stick one down the middle of each of your Oreo balls. It's better if they go in at least halfway through the ball.
- Place in the freezer to set for at least 30 minutes.
Decorate Pumpkin-Shaped Oreo Truffles
- Melt orange melting chocolate. If using white chocolate, melt and add a couple of drops of orange food coloring. Make sure you stir until the color is evenly distributed. I recommend working in small batches of orange chocolate so that your chocolate does not dry up too early or you burn it in the microwave by melting too much at once.
- If your chocolate is too thick, add some coconut oil about 1/2 a teaspoon at a time. Stir it in well. You want your chocolate to be a little runny so that the excess drips off your Oreo balls.
- Carefully swirl each pumpkin-shaped Oreo truffle in the melted orange chocolate, avoiding the stem. Make sure all of the Oreo part is covered in orange chocolate.
- Place back on cookie sheet to set.
- Store in the fridge or freezer until ready to eat.
