Ingredients for Air Fryer Churro Bites

churro bites ingredients

For the churro bites

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed (from a 17.3 oz box with 2 sheets)
  • 6 tablespoons melted butter (don’t melt it all at once, work in batches)

For the cinnamon sugar coating

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon (adjust to taste)

Optional dips

  • Store-bought chocolate sauce
  • Store-bought caramel sauce

How to Make Air Fryer Churro Bites

1. Thaw the puff pastry until it unfolds easily but remains cool and slightly firm.

2. Preheat the air fryer to 350°F for about 3 minutes if your model allows preheating.

3. While your air fryer preheats, lightly flour your work surface if the pastry feels sticky.

4. Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheet. Gently press out any major creases with your fingers or a rolling pin, but do not roll it too thin.

Using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter, cut the pastry into roughly 1×2 inch rectangles. They do not need to be perfect.

5. Spread the rectangles in a single layer in the basket of your air fryer, leaving a little space between each one so they can puff.

6. Air fry at 350°F for 6 to 9 minutes. Pause around minute 4 or 5 to gently shake the basket or flip the bites for even browning.

Remove when puffed, crisp, and golden.

7. Make the cinnamon sugar. In a shallow bowl, stir together the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon.

8. While still warm, brush each churro bite with melted butter (front and back). Then, toss the warm churros in the cinnamon sugar mixture until well coated.

9. Pile the churro bites on a plate or in a shallow bowl.  Serve with small bowls of chocolate sauce or caramel sauce for dipping.

They are at their best warm and fresh, but leftover bites are still tasty at room temperature.

Pro Tips

  • Watch how much your puff pastry puffs. It will puff up quite a bit in the air fryer! If that’s your jam, then great! If you want slightly less puffy, I would recommend letting your dough sit out a bit longer at room temperature, as room temperature puff pastry will puff up less than cold puff pastry.
  • Work in small batches. Crowding the basket leads to uneven browning and less flaky layers. Alternatively, if you’re pressed for time and don’t want to work in batches, you can also bake your churro bites.
  • Get to know your air fryer. Start checking at 6 minutes and add one to two minutes if they are still pale. Every air fryer is different, so take the timings with a grain of salt!
  • Shake or flip once. That small flip at minute 4 or 5 helps them color evenly and prevents overbrowned bottoms.
  • Butter in stages. Melt a few tablespoons at a time so the butter stays warm and helps the sugar stick.
  • Party serving tip. Use paper cups on a dessert board and include bowls of caramel and chocolate sauce for an easy summer cookout desserts station.

FAQs

Can I use both sheets of puff pastry?

Yes. Double the other ingredients and cook in batches. Keep the second sheet in the fridge while you work so it stays cold.

How should leftovers be stored and reheated?

Let the bites cool completely, store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Reheat in the air fryer at 325°F for a few minutes to crisp them back up.

Can I make these dairy free?

Yes. Use dairy free puff pastry and swap the butter for a neutral oil or vegan butter. Brush lightly so they stay crisp.

What if you don’t have an air fryer?

You can also bake these on a parchment-lined sheet at 400°F for about 10 to 14 minutes until golden. Then brush with butter and coat in cinnamon sugar.
